ALTERNATIVES FOR PRESERVATION OF BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS IN BLUEBERRY PULP: HEAT TREATMENT ASSOCIATED WITH THE ADDITION OF XANTHAN PRUNI Rev. Bras. Frutic.
FIORAVANTE,JÚLIA BORIN; SOUZA,VANESSA RODRIGUES DUARTE DE; RODRIGUES,ROSANE DA SILVA; DIAZ,PATRÍCIA DE OLIVEIRA; MOREIRA,ANGELITA DA SILVEIRA.
ABSTRACT In this study, to increase the preservation of phenolic bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity in blueberry pulp, heat treatment associated with addition of xanthan gum was used. A commercial mixture of blueberries (Powerblue, Climax and Bluegen cultivars) was added with 0.08% (w/w) citric acid and subjected to heat treatment by direct heating until 90 °C in conventional open pan (OP) and by direct application of steam (AS); both with and without the addition of xanthan pruni (OPX and ASX), followed by pulping. Samples of only frozed fruits were considered as control. The five treatments remained under freezing and were evaluated until 90 days of storage for antioxidant activity, phenols, flavonoids and total monomeric anthocyanins. The...

Bifurcation of the subtropical south equatorial current against New Caledonia in December 2004 from a hydrographic inverse box model ArchiMer
Ganachaud, Alexandre; Gourdeau, Lionel; Kessler, William.
The South Equatorial Current (SEC), the westward branch of the South Pacific subtropical gyre, extends from the equator to 30 degrees S at depth. Linear ocean dynamics predict that the SEC forms boundary currents on the eastern coasts of the South Pacific islands it encounters. Those currents would then detach at the northern and southern tips of the islands, and cross the Coral Sea in the form of jets. The Fiji Islands, the Vanuatu archipelago, and New Caledonia are the major topographic obstacles on the SEC pathway to the Australian coast. Large-scale numerical studies, as well as climatologies, suggest the formation of three jets in their lee: the north Vanuatu jet (NVJ), the north Caledonian jet (NCJ), and the south Caledonian jet (SCJ), implying a...

Climate change and adaptive strategies in Brazil: the economic effects of genetic breeding Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Pires,Marcel Viana; Cunha,Dênis Antônio da.
Plant breeding through the development of seeds resistant to water stress or high temperature is an important adaptive strategy to cope climate change. In this way, by providing an analysis of adaptation to climate change using genetic breeding on Brazilian farms, this work aims to investigate how climate change will affect the adoption of genetic breeding and profitability of farmers. Temperature and rainfall projections for 2010-2099 time periods were used, considering different climate scenarios (A1B and A2), according to the 4th Assessment Report of IPCC (2007). A Treatment Effects model outlines the analytical framework in this study. Our results indicate the probability of adopting transgenic seeds will grow from 74% in the current period to 86% in...

Energy Consumption Requirements of Agricultural Dryers: An Overview CIGR Journal
Nwakuba, Nnaemeka Reginald; ASOEGWU, SABBAS N.; NWAIGWE, KEVIN N..
Artificial dryers promote high-quality dried food products in spite of their considerable energy consumption. This paper presents a review of energy consumption of agricultural dryers in order to ensure optimal dryer design and cost effective dryer operation which yield better quality dried products. From the review, dryer design, type, crop characteristics, and ambient environmental conditions are seen as major factors affecting dryer energy consumption. Energy consumption of different dryers with different products was reported using different empirical expressions and graphical approaches. Results obtained show that microwave dryers have about 70% energy savings when compared to other artificial dryers due to their low energy consumption at higher power...

Melo,Thiago V.; Furlan,Renato L.; Milani,Adhemar P.; Buzanskas,Marcos E.; Mota,Diego A..
The present study was conducted at the Department of Rural Engineering and the Department of Animal Morphology and Physiology of FCAV/Unesp, Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. The objective was to verify the influence of roof slope, exposure and roofing material on the internal temperature of reduced models of animal production facilities. For the development of the research, 48 reduced and dissemble models with dimensions 1.00 × 1.00 × 0.50 m were used. The roof was shed-type, and the models faced to the North or South directions, with 24 models for each side of exposure. Ceramic, galvanized-steel and fibro tiles were used to build the roofs. Slopes varied between 20, 30, 40 and 50% for the ceramic tile and 10, 30, 40 and 50% for the other two. Inside the models,...

Heat identification by 17β-estradiol and progesterone quantification in individual raw milk samples by enzyme immunoassay Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Domènech,Anna; Pich,Sara; Arís,Anna; Plasencia,Carmen; Bach,Alex; Serrano,Alicia.
Background: There is a substantial decline in first-service-pregnancy-rate in dairy cows. In this regard, future prospects are to measure milk hormones on-farm and progesterone levels in milk are not enough to precise ovulation unless connected to other data. The objectives of this study were to investigate whether 17β-estradiol could be measured from individual cow milk samples using a commercially available non-radiolabelled enzyme immunoassay kit (EIA) with no previously reported milk application, and whether those detections could precisely illustrate 17β-estradiol pre-ovulation peak in spite of its limited concentration and short manifestation in milk. Results: Milk sample treatments for progesterone and 17β-estradiol EIA...

Impacts of drought and temperature stress on coffee physiology and production: a review Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
DaMatta,Fábio M.; Ramalho,José D. Cochicho.
Overall, drought and unfavourable temperatures are the major climatic limitations for coffee production. These limitations are expected to become increasingly important in several coffee growing regions due to the recognized changes in global climate, and also because coffee cultivation has spread towards marginal lands, where water shortage and unfavourable temperatures constitute major constraints to coffee yield. In this review, we examine the impacts of such limitations on the physiology, and consequently on the production of mainly Coffea arabica and C. canephora, which account for about 99 % of the world coffee bean production. The first section deals with climatic factors and the coffee plant’s requirements. The importance of controlling oxidative...

Fonseca,S.F.; Mendonça,V.A.; Teles,M.C.; Ribeiro,V.G.C.; Tossige-Gomes,R.; Neves,C.D.C.; Rocha-Vieira,E.; Leite,L.H.R.; Soares,D.D.; Coimbra,C.C.; Lacerda,A.C.R..
Hypertension is characterized by a pro-inflammatory status, including redox imbalance and increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which may be exacerbated after heat exposure. However, the effects of heat exposure, specifically in individuals with inflammatory chronic diseases such as hypertension, are complex and not well understood. This study compared the effects of heat exposure on plasma cytokine levels and redox status parameters in 8 hypertensive (H) and 8 normotensive (N) subjects (age: 46.5±1.3 and 45.6±1.4 years old, body mass index: 25.8±0.8 and 25.6±0.6 kg/m2, mean arterial pressure: 98.0±2.8 and 86.0±2.3 mmHg, respectively). They remained at rest in a sitting position for 10 min in a thermoneutral environment (22°C) followed by 30 min...

SIDDIES Corridor: A Major East-West Pathway of Long-Lived Surface and Subsurface Eddies Crossing the Subtropical South Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Dilmahamod, Ahmad Fehmi; Aguiar-gonzalez, B.; Penven, P.; Reason, C. J. C.; De Ruijter, W. P. M.; Malan, N.; Hermes, J. C..
South Indian Ocean eddies (SIDDIES), originating from a high evaporation region in the eastern Indian Ocean, are investigated by tracking individual eddies from satellite data and co‐located Argo floats. A subsurface‐eddy identification method, based on its steric dynamic height anomaly, is devised to assign Argo profiles to surface eddies (surfSIDDIES) or subsurface eddies (subSIDDIES). These westward‐propagating, long‐lived features (>3 months) prevail over a preferential latitudinal band, forming a permanent structure linking the eastern to the western Indian Ocean, that we call the 'SIDDIES Corridor'. Key features have been revealed in the mean thermohaline vertical structure of these eddies. Anticyclonic SIDDIES are characterized by positive...
